Biographical Data for Larry Hill

Larry has been a regional public information officer in Eastern Virginia for the Virginia Department of Health since 2003. Prior to that, he was a police officer and communications director for the Norfolk Police Department with 26 years of police service. After retiring he was a civilian public information officer for the Virginia State Police for three years. He has a BA degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Liberal Arts.

Larry has been a communication consultant for years and responded for FEMA during the Hurricane Katrina crisis and for the State of Virginia during the Virginia Tech shootings. He was chairman of the NPHIC Awards Committee for two years. One thing that he teaches in communications training is not to say "Dealing with the Media." The term is not positive when you look up the word dealing. Instead, he promotes the use of the term "Working with the Media" and many communication materials from other students and companies are now using the same terms.
